Group triangle

Stagger heights and depths so heads form a triangle, not a police lineup.

  • family
  • weddings
  • friends

Steps

  1. Put the tallest person slightly back and center, or seated if everyone is similar height.

  2. Place others on either side, a half-step forward, inner shoulders turned in.

  3. Fill gaps: someone kneels, sits on a stool, or leans in from the side.

  4. On β€œthree,” everyone leans a few centimeters toward the middle and the lens.

Pro tips

  • Hands on shoulders, waists, or kids β€” empty hanging arms look lost.
  • Take several frames. Blink and expression mismatches are guaranteed in groups.

Common mistakes

  • A perfectly straight row of heads. Vary height even if you have to bend knees.
  • People at the edges stepping out of the light. Check the farthest faces.

Lighting

Broad, even light so faces at the edge aren’t in shadow. Outdoors, open shade beats mixed sun and shade across the group.
