For meneasy
Hands in pockets
The default “I don’t know what to do with my hands” fix for men. Thumbs out, shoulders easy.
- men
- casual portraits
- full-length
Steps
Stand with feet about shoulder-width, one foot a half-step forward.
Slide both hands into the front pockets, thumbs hooked over the edge.
Drop the shoulders; don’t puff the chest.
Turn the torso a few degrees off-camera, then look back at the lens.
Pro tips
- Push the hands in only to the knuckles so the jacket or shirt still has shape.
- A tiny weight shift onto the back foot slims the stance.
Common mistakes
- Jamming hands all the way in, which bunches the pockets and lifts the shoulders.
- Locking both elbows and standing perfectly square.
Lighting
Open shade or window light. Side light carves the jaw; avoid flat on-camera flash.
