The walk-by

A mid-stride shot. Movement hides stiffness and gives clothes a natural drape.

  • street style
  • lookbooks
  • full-body outdoors

Steps

  1. Walk slowly toward a point just beside the camera, not straight into it.

  2. Take a slightly longer stride than usual; keep the spine tall.

  3. Let the arms swing; don’t pocket both hands.

  4. On the photographer’s count, look toward the lens for one frame.

Pro tips

  • Burst mode is your friend — pick the frame where the back heel is just lifting.
  • A light breeze or a turn at the end of the walk adds life to hair and fabric.

Common mistakes

  • Marching or bouncing. Slow it down until it feels almost too easy.
  • Looking at your feet. Pick a spot at camera height and keep it.

Lighting

Open shade or late-day sun behind you with a reflector or phone flash for the face.
